2002 Fall Liturgical Update
Are you using the new Lectionary for Mass,
Volume II?
The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops decreed the "compulsory use date" for
the new Lectionary for Mass, Volume II (for weekdays [Year I and II]), for commons, ritual
Masses and Masses for various needs and occasions) as of May 19, 2002. Check to make sure
you are using this most current edition. All previous lectionary translations are no longer to
be used for Mass.

All Souls Day, Saturday,
November 2, 2002 Weddings?
Questions have arisen about the advisability of scheduling weddings in 2002 on All Souls Day.
According to church norms, a ritual Mass (like a wedding Mass) is not permitted on All Souls
Day. There are several options:
- Do not accept any wedding on All Souls Day. Certainly, the liturgical character
of the day does not lend itself to festive celebration.
- If a wedding must be accepted, use the Rite of Marriage Outside Mass.
- If the couple wants a Mass, the Mass texts and readings must be from All Souls Day.
In looking over these texts with the bride and groom, it will be apparent that these scripture
texts and prayers are not fitting for a wedding celebration, and would give you the opportunity
to suggest another day.

Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception 2002
This year the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on the Second Sunday of Advent. According
to the US Bishops Conference, the Solemnity is transferred this year to Monday, December
9, 2002. However, the holy day obligation to attend Mass on December 9th does not transfer. Therefore,
on the weekend of December 7-8, 2002, parishes should celebrate the Mass for the Second Sunday
of Advent. On Monday, December 9, 2002, the Mass for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
is celebrated. However, it is not a holy day of obligation.

Thinking ahead Christmas
Season Manger Scenes
A reminder from the 1989 Book of Blessings, paragraph 1544: "If a manger is set up
in church, it must not be placed in the presbyterium (sanctuary). A place should be chosen that
is suitable for prayer and devotion and easily accessible by the faithful".
