“El Papa, Pope John Paul II, has gone home. May he rest in peace,”Archbishop
Michael J. Sheehan upon hearing of the Holy Father’s death.
It is with great sadness that we mark the death of Pope John Paul II. We are
grateful to God for the time the Holy Father has spent among us and we commend him to God’s
love and mercy.
Today, I will be celebrating a special Memorial Mass at 5:15 P.M.
at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Santa Fe. I ask that all parishes of the Archdiocese
also have a special Memorial Mass as soon as possible.
Pope John Paul II served as the archetype of goodness in modern history. I
believe he felt that he had an obligation to stay and continue until the Lord called him from
his life. He modeled his own limitations in the way of a Christian teaching: the value
of all human life. His final gift to us is the exemplary manner in which he taught
us the significance of life, of old age, of the infirmed. The Holy Father used his infirmities
and his old age to demonstrate to all populations of the world to pay more attention to the
elderly; to listen to their wisdom and respect the lives of the older generation. May
we heed our shepherd’s call.
