Archbishop Michael J. Sheehan will officiate at the Annual Archdiocesan
Pro-Life Unity Mass, tonight Friday, January 23, 2004, 7:00 PM at Sangre de Cristo Church, 8901
Candelaria Rd, NE, Albuquerque, NM.
Archbishop Sheehan invites all to join him as they commit themselves to
be future protectors and supporters of life. Archbishop Sheehan invites all to:
- come celebrate and pray for a deeper respect for and quality of life - from conception
to natural death;
- pray for the unborn;
- support and pray for new mothers and their children;
- support, pray for and honor the elders of our community; and
- support those who are poor and vulnerable…those without food, shelter or families.
The annual Mass, started over 30 years ago, has become an intergenerational Unity Mass. Youth
group members, under the direction of Sangre de Cristo Youth Director, Patricia Hughes,
have planned the Liturgy and will partake in the ceremonial roles.
Ms. Anne Avellone, Director of Social Justice stresses “As Catholics,
we honor, support and celebrate the sacredness of life in its entirety. Life issues are as a
seamless garment of love, based on the dignity of the human person, from conception to natural
Attendees are invited to bring baby gifts, socks and toiletries to be donated to expectant
mothers through Birthright and Amadea Maternity Home and also distributed to homeless shelters
and nursing homes in the community.
The Mass is held annually in January when abortion in the United States became legal on demand
at any time during pregnancy. This was the 1973 Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade.
